Van Zylshof
has been in the Van Zyl family for three generations and is run
along the lines of small family estates in France, where different
generations of the same family manage all aspects of operation –
from day-to-day tending of the vines to marketing. The estate comprises
some 40 hectares on a gentle southern slope above the Breede River.
Deep, lime-rich soils, combined with a moderate climate, create
perfect conditions for the cultivation of noble grape varieties.

Since 1984,
the father-and-son team of Chris and Andri van Zyl has concentrated
on planting only the best clones available of various noble cultivars,
namely Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon
and Merlot.

The cellar,
which was built by Oupa Andries van Zyl in 1940, has been modernised
over the years, but the family ethos has remained. Currently at
the helm is Andri van Zyl, who studied viniculture and viticulture
at Stellenbosch University. His younger son, Dirk, will join his
father and grandfather after completing his own studies.
As an award-winning winemaker,
Andri has a down-to-earth philosophy that has laid the foundation
for Van Zylshof’s success: producing easy-drinking, quality
wines that offer excellent value for money and make you want to
come back for more. |
